RPD Online Mode vs Offline Mode

To open the rpd in online mode oracle bi server must be running
Online mode – only when the bi server service is up and running.
The rpd you open in online is the one that you have configured to open in NQSConfig file.
To open the RPD in online mode
It must be configured in NQSConfig file.
BI server service should be running.
Changes to the repository are immediately applied to the server when they are checked in
In offline mode, the administrator can edit any repository and save the changes. The changes are applied when the BI Server next starts and loads the repository into memory. 
In online mode RPD is loaded into oracle bi server memory.

To open the RPD in offline
it need to be configured in NQSConfig file.
Not required oracle BI server service in  running mode.
In offline mode repository is not loaded into oracle bi server memory
In offline mode you cannot perform below tasks.
1.     Manage user sessions
2.     Manage query cache
3.     Stop oracle bi server.
4.     Manage scheduled jobs
Use offline mode to view and modify the repository when it’s not loaded in oracle bi server memory
Use online mode to view and modify the repository when its loaded in oracle bi server memory.
If we open the repository in offline mode while its loaded in oracle bi server memory RPD is opened in read only mode.
